Text Box: AUGUST 2004Good Day Post #57 Member!

Our post meeting was held on 20 July and our next meeting is 17 August at 6 pm.  Remember, dinner is served after the meeting and the bar is open.  Prices at the bar will be reduced for the meeting.  Hope to see you there!!

Our Independence Day Barbecue went great!  We served over 130 folks with barbecue chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs along with the baked beans, potato and pasta salads the Auxiliary provided.  Bonnie Lou and her Stealth Band played all our favorites.  And if you left early or weren’t there at all, you missed the fun when some of the ladies danced to YMCA, the Macarena, the Bunny Hop and the Hokey Pokey!!!  Winners of the raffle were:  Mary Ann Jerome won the rifle and Nancy Coulston won the mini-stereo.  We also had door prizes and five folks won barbecue sets.  All prizes were donated for the raffle.

There’s been a little confusion about our new Post hours.  Let’s see if I can clear it up.  Our regular business hours are still Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8-11 am.  We have added hours on Fridays and Saturdays from 4 pm till whenever for socializing starting 9 July.  We’ll continue these hours as long as we have participation.  During this time, the bar will be open for members only and up to five guests per member.  There are certain rules with this.  Only the member can purchase drinks from the bar and if the member leaves, so must their guests.  I hope this clears up the confusion.  We were open for these new hours the first time on 9 July and we had a few members show up.  There was another shuffleboard “tournament” between the Lucy Kreutzer/Lil Newcomb team and the Jim Kreutzer/Ed Newcomb team and this time the ladies won!!!!  The team of Maria Gregolynskyj and yours truly lost to the team of Bhodan “Greg” Gregolynskyj and Doug Gorniak but Doug got me tipsy and that affected my play and that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!!  When the Greg/Doug team played the Jim/Ed team, the Greg/Doug team emerged victorious.

Enclosed you will find 5 tickets each for the Pancake Breakfast on 14 August, the Spaghetti Dinner on 20 August, and the Labor Day BBQ on 6 September.  Please purchase what you need for yourself and try to sell the rest.  Monies need to be turned in by the date of each event.

 MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER:

Well it’s that time again.  By now you should all be aware of the 10% cash discount that we Post 57 members, ladies auxiliary, and immediate family of said persons can get at the new Dental office in Williams.  If not, let me explain a little since I have already taken advantage of this exclusive benefit.  But first let me again say thanks to Alva and Richard Brown for taking the lead on getting us this benefit.  First ground rule for getting the 10% cash discount is you have to be a member of Robert Fulton Post 57 or its Auxiliary, second is the 10% can only be used for cash a transaction (cash includes credit card.).  So if you have and use dental insurance, you do not get the discount.  Basically here is how it works.  Just like any dentist, the first time you go to them you will need x-rays (unless you have current ones that you can provide I believe), and an examination.  The x-rays cost $46 for the 4 bite wings and $87 for a full set (this I got since it had been 2 years since I cracked a front tooth).  The examination runs $60 and a cleaning is $65.  So the approximate basic cost will be 46+60+65 = $171.00 minus $17.10 (the 10%) = $153.90.  Now if you need any other work done they will give you an itemized list of the work required and costs.  This will allow you to save up the money you need because you have to pay for the work then and there if you use cash, if you have dental insurance then you can go that route but then no 10% discount.  Williams Family Dental is located next to the Williams Health Center behind Safeway, phone (928) 856-2100 and make sure they know you’re from Post 57.  They will ask for your Legion or Auxiliary membership card for proof, so be proud and show it.

Commander

POST NEWS

Some of our members are receiving mail notifications from National Headquarters that they have been nominated to become a member of the American Legion.  Please disregard.  You are a member of Post 57.  Also, if you receive a notice for your 2005 dues, please DO NOT pay National Headquarters.  Pay your dues directly to the Post and do this as soon as so we can be first to attain the 100% goal in our District and State.  We want to have 100% for the Fall Conference in November.  This includes the ladies of the Auxiliary.

Did you know that one of your benefits of being an American Legion member is a FREE $1000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance coverage?  When you renew your membership, make sure you get the insurance application form to mail in.

CONVENTION NEWS:  Paul Griffin elected new Department Commander.  Al Dunaway elected new Area C Commander.  We also submitted two resolutions: one to change the dates of the Korean War end date to “To be Determined”, this one passed and will be voted on at National Convention.  The second was to change the word “wife” to “spouse” for Auxiliary membership and this one was defeated.

On 26 August from 6-8pm, Jim Boyd will be giving CERT training.  This training is for those living in rural areas to help them prepare for possible disasters, i.e. fires, hazardous material spills, etc.  All are welcome to come and encouraged all to do so.  There are other dates and locations he is holding this training posted on the bulletin board at the Post Office.

New Post Hours:  Business hours are 8-11 am, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Fridays and Saturdays the post will be open from 4 pm -?? for socializing as of 9 July.  There was some confusion on how many guests members could bring.  At the Post meeting in June we had said four but we found out members could bring up to five guests.

TOURNAMENTS!!  We’re looking to possibly start tournaments for different card games and shuffleboard.  There will be a “sign up” list at the post to put your name on and what game you might be interested in playing.  Shuffleboard and pinochle have already been mentioned but if you have another idea and are interested, please sign up on the list and put what game you’d be interested in playing.  This list will not commit anybody to anything.  It’s just a list to see who might be interested in playing what.

LADIES AUXILIARY NEWS

Ladies

We received a letter from the District 7 Vice President Dee Althause.  She says in this letter:

“Batters Up!!

We are starting a new year for membership. We were #1 last year and won the Highest Awards, The Monica Jarvis Plaques.  Are we going to do it again this year, for the third time in a row?  You bet we are!!  Our first target date is the first Wednesday in September with 50%.  So put on your baseball running shoes and get those renewals and new members. Don't forget for every 4 new members that you get, it is a Home Run.  Come on Players let's get those Home Runs.  I am looking forward to winning the pennant at the ending of the baseball season. So let's put on the speed and run those bases at full speed.  I know that our teams in District 7 can do the job.  Keep the Light from our Light House shining on our players.”

Yes ladies, we can do it.  Ash Fork Aux was first the last two years with 100% members renewing and new members and we will do it again for the third time.  Also keep track of your hours, cost of materials, miles etc that you are doing for the Community Services, Field Service, Home Services, Americanism, etc.  Come by the post and see the Certificates that our Aux have already won.  Ladies Keep Up the Good Work!!

The Veteran

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN, who salutes the Flag, who serves under the Flag,

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM
