Good Day Post #57 Member!

 MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER:

Hi everyone, we’re back!!!  For those that didn’t know, my wife and I were gone for a couple of weeks.  One of which was in Indianapolis were we attended the American Legion College.  It was a very busy week with 12 to 16 hour days.  The most important thing we left with from the college was that membership should not be the number one program in the American Legion.  The most important thing should be service to the community and veterans.  The idea is that with good service programs that assists our veterans and gives back to our communities, membership will flourish.

Another item we picked up on is that many Legionnaires are unaware of their benefits as veterans and as members of the American Legion.  In past newsletters I have touched on a couple of our Legionnaire benefits concerning insurance programs and discounts at certain pharmacies, however, there are many more and we will be sending out a special mailing of pamphlets to ensure you are apprised of them.  The discount on prescriptions is not in conjunction with insurance.  If your insurance will pay for the prescription, you don’t get an additional discount.  However, if your insurance will not cover a specific prescription, then you can use the discount by showing your Legion card at participating pharmacies.  As for veteran’s issues and benefits, our newsletter editor has placed many tidbits of information in the newsletters and will continue to do so as she receives the information.  Also, our service officer, Al Walsh, is available to assist veterans, by appointment, in filling out VA claim forms and helping find out other information from the VA that may fall under his purview as service officer.

Finally, thanks to all those that have renewed their membership and our new members.  As of this writing I am happy to report that although there are still some members that have not renewed, we have exceeded the 100 % membership goal.  If you are one of the few that hasn’t renewed I personally would like to know why not and what we can do to improve so you will want to be a member.  Remember this is your post and we are here to help veterans and the community.

POST NEWS

Our post meeting was on 16 November and our next meeting is 21 December at 6 pm.  Remember, dinner is served after the meeting and the bar is open.  Hope to see you there!!

The Post is having a 50/50 drawing for Christmas.  At the current rate of sales, the prize should be $50 for the winner.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.  Buy them at the Post.  Drawing will be on 12 December during Bingo.  (Note:  no tickets will be sold during Bingo.)

Here’s a good news story:  a member of our Post applied for and got his Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC) and got it approved!  He sent it off on October 29 and received an answer back on 12 November!!  They had sent him a letter telling him it would take 6-8 months but in the same days mail, he received notification that his application had been approved and they would be sending him a check retroactive to January 2004!  This goes to show, if you are a military retiree and are receiving combat-related VA compensation or a disability directly related to a Purple Heart, apply for the CRSC!  This Post member will now be getting his full retirement pay and the CRSC.  More CRSC information is available at the Post in the Newsletter book.

 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Happy Holidays to All,

Where this year has gone, I have no idea.  Here we are again in December and if I don’t get started there won’t be a visit from Santa.  Anyway, I would like to welcome our newest member Rosemary Gorniak, our Commander’s sister.

We went to the Fall Conference November 5-7 and had a very enjoyable time.  I brought back a lot of packets on our projects.  Ladies, I need you to step forward and help do these programs—one person can’t do it.

Don’t forget our New Year’s Eve party and raffle.  We have some wonderful prizes and the winning tickets will be drawn on New Year’s Eve at the party so buy tickets and good luck!  You don’t have to be present to win.

On this short happy note, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.  God bless everyone.

Peggy Gasdorf

Auxiliary President

AUXILIARY NEWS

Greeting and Happy Holidays to all our Legion Family from the New Year’s Eve Dance Committee.

This New Year’s Eve Dance on 31 December will be somewhat different.  The Auxiliary will sponsor the Dance and the Post will be in charge of the No-Host Bar.  Proceeds from each will go the respective departments.

R.S.V.P. tickets for the Dance are different this year.  We hope the change will not inconvenience you.  Enclosed with the newsletter are two tickets.  The tickets are for $10 each.  Each ticket will admit one adult to the Dance.  Additional tickets are available if needed.

If you purchase the tickets but don’t plan to attend, please advise us.  This will help us in planning seating arrangement, appetizers and champagne.

At this printing, plans are for the music to be canned so if you have a favorite song on CD or cassette, feel free to bring it.  Be sure you have your name on both the case and the music.  If you have any questions, please call Maxine Bowling at 607-4466, Peggy at 637-2304, or the Post during business hours.  Hope to see you at the Dance!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

Here are a couple of scams everyone needs to be aware of.

I want to thank Jim Boyd, one of our newest members, for passing this information on to me.  A new scam that has arisen involving credit cards and called “The Switch.”  A couple of quick examples of how your credit card could be switched for a similar expired card.  Guy goes to the gym, puts his belongings in a locker and goes and does his thing.  When he gets back to his locker he sees it open.  He checks through his wallet and all looks okay.  A few weeks later he gets his credit card bill with $14,000 worth of charges on it.  Calls the credit card company and they find no mistake and asked if his card had been stolen.  He says no but when he checks his wallet, he finds that another similar expired card was in its place.  Bottom line, since he didn’t report the card stolen earlier, he ended up having to pay $9,000 of the bill.  This second scenario probably is more relevant to most of us.  Man pays for a meal at a restaurant with his credit card.  When he gets it back, he just happens to look at it and realizes it’s not his but a similar expired card.  He calls the waitress and she looks perplexed.  She takes the card back, apologizing.  She hurries back to the counter under the watchful eye of the gentleman.  All the waitress did whilst walking to the counter was she waved the wrong expired card to the counter cashier and the counter cashier immediately looked down and took out the real card.  No exchange of words...nothing.... She took it and returned it to the gentleman with apologies.

Verdict: make sure the credit cards in your wallet are yours!  Check the name on the card every time you sign for something and is taken away for even a short period of time.  Many of us would just take back our credit card without even looking at it, thinking that it has to be ours.

For your own sake, DEVELOP THE HABIT TO CHECK YOUR CREDIT CARD, EACH TIME YOU TAKE IT BACK! "BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY."

Another scam that I’ve been made aware of comes from more Legion family members, John and Paul Smith.  This one involves the phone and calling the area code 809.  How does it work?  You’ll receive a message on your answering machine or page asking you to call a number beginning with the area code 809.  The reason you’re asked to call will involve something with a family member or that you’ve won a prize.  If you call from the US, you will apparently be charged $2425 per minute!  They will keep you on the phone as long as they can either through a long recorded message or talking to you.  The 809 area code is in The Bahamas and it can be used as a “pay-per-call” number, similar to the 900 numbers in the U.S. but because it’s not in the U.S., it’s not covered by U.S. regulations requiring that your notified and warned of the charges and rates involved.  And because you actually did make the call, you won’t have any recourse to get the charges reversed.  Bottom line, no matter how you get the message to call a number with an 809 area code that you don’t recognize, DISREGARD THE MESSAGE AND DON’T CALL THE NUMBER!  The message regarding this scam originated with an AT&T Service Manager.

Thanks again to Jim Boyd and John & Paula Smith for emailing me the warnings on these scams!

MONTHLY TRIVIA:  November Newsletter:  Are you required to destroy the United States flag if it touches the ground?  Answer:  Flag Code section 176b states that the flag should not touch anything beneath it such as the ground. This is stated to indicate that care should be exercised in the handling of the flag, to protect it from becoming soiled or damaged. You ARE NOT required to destroy the flag when this happens. As long as the flag remains suitable for display, even if washing or dry-cleaning (which is acceptable practice) is required, you may continue to display the flag as a symbol of our great country.

This month’s question:  Are there penalties for the physical desecration of the United States flag and if so what are the penalties?
