And as far as elections go, Lucy Kreutzer was elected District President and Barry Sharp was re-elected District Junior Vice Commander.  CONGRATULATIONS to you both!!!!

Our next meeting is 15 June at 6 pm.  Remember, dinner is served after the meeting and the bar is open.  Hope to see you there!!

 MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER:

As your new Commander, first I would like to say thanks to all of you for putting your trust in me.  I would also like to thank to the departing Commander Frank Cedillo for a job well done.  Last year we had a great recruiting year.  We picked up quite a few new members thanks all that recruited new members but especially to Yvonne Gorniak, who received her Brieden Ranger pin for recruiting 5 new members and Barry Sharp who is waiting for his pin.  This upcoming year I hope will be the year of participation.  We have already seen an increase of about 100 % in participation at Legion meetings, averaging about 18 members.  We are hoping to see even more at meetings, as well as, to the quarterly social.  In our short two years here there are many members my wife and I haven’t met yet, so come out to the social and let us shake your hand and personally thank you for being a member of Post 57, and see some old friends that you may not have seen for a while and just talk.  I hope to see many of you at the May 29th Prayer Breakfast to help us Honor our WW II Veterans, something that has been too long in coming.  I personally am looking forward to hearing our guest speakers share some of their personnel experiences from that era.  Finally, over the next year I plan on having Commanders Comments in every issue of the Ash Fork Legionnaire hopefully covering a variety of subjects of interest.

Douglas Gorniak

Commander

LADIES AUXILIARY

 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

I wish to thank each and every one of our hard workers.  There are so many to thank for all they have done, it’s hard to name all of you.  Just to name a few; to Ann, “Queen of Trash” and her crew, who put on our Yard Sale; to Bernadine, Vice President, the mistress of the Cash Register and membership, for the great meals for our meetings; to Maria, our Secretary, for the beautiful records of all our meetings; to Maxine, our “Lady of all Trades”, for being our treasurer, carpenter, decorator, painter, etc.; to Dolly Sharp, for all the wonderful food and donations, for always standing by in case Bernadine or I can’t make it to a meeting; to Dorothy Cowper for all the heavenly prayers and yummy cakes she makes; and to our Past President Lucy, for the beautiful sweaters and donations of all her wonderful cooking.  To all of you, thank you so much.

Without our members, we would be just another Auxiliary.  However, ours is very special.  We have been first in Arizona to attain our 100% membership for the past two years.  Let’s make it three in a row!  Arizona is going to know where Ash Fork is!  We’re on a roll, so please pay your dues in June.  You can do this by giving them to Bernadine Sydow, Lucy Kreutzer, Maxine Bowling, Maria Gregolynskyj or myself.  We will get your cards to you for 2004-2005 after we come back from Convention.  From all of us, in advance, thank you.  Make us number 1 again.

Good luck to all my officers and thank you for taking the office you have been elected to.

One last thank you goes to our Post for being there, backing and supporting our Auxiliary.  Thanks to Commander Doug, Adjutant Barry, Finance Officer Yvonne and all the officers and members of Post 57.

Don’t forget our Bake Sale on 12 June.  We need donations and buyers.

Peggy Gasdorf

Auxiliary President

POST NEWS

The Post is finished!!  The Post is finished!!  All we are waiting on is the inspector to do the final inspection.  If you haven’t seen it, stop by during business hours (Mon-Wed, 8-11am) or one of our many events.  We still have the bank loan to pay off and some other items we’d like to purchase (like a shuffle board), so if you would like to make a donation towards these ends, we’ll gladly accept it!

The Spaghetti Dinner went great!  If you missed it, you missed some good food and good company.  Look for the pictures in the Ash Fork On-Line.  Georgia Herhold was there with her camera.  As with every first time project, we had a learning curve.  Keep the garlic bread warm in the oven, good idea.  Keeping it set at 350, bad idea.  And we also had a delay because of cooking more noodles.  I think we have those “problems” under control and we should do much better next time.  If you were there and even if you weren’t, if you have any inputs to help us do a better job, just let us know!!  We will be having another one soon, so stay tuned!

Poppy Program.  The Auxiliary will be out with the Poppies at different locations.  Make sure you stop and introduce yourself, get your Poppy and maybe make a donation.  All funds go to support veterans’ programs.

Don’t forget, our Prayer Breakfast to honor our WWII veterans is 29 May, Prayer Breakfast, 9am-12pm.  We will have everybody be seated and then serve at 9:30 for those that are there.  A couple of our WWII veterans have graciously agreed to share some of their memories and we plan to have them speak at 10am.  If you are a WWII veteran and would also like to share some memories, you will be free to do so.  If you haven’t let us know if you will be there or not, please try to do so by 26 May so we can adjust the seating arrangements.  Call the Post at 637-2254 (Mon-Wed, 8-11am) or me at home at 637-2240.  We will also be presenting those WWII veterans present a certificate honoring their service.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Cemetery, 31 May 2004.  The ceremony is at 10 am but Post member who wish to participate are asked to please be there by 9:15 am.  We do have a guest speaker.

Pioneer Day is 5 June and we will be marching in the parade.  Meet at the Post at 8am that morning if you want to be in the parade. We will have trailers set up for those who can’t march.

Rummage Sale and Bake Sale, 12 June, 8 am4 pm.  We are asking for item donations and all the money raised from the sale will go to the Post.  We are NOT selling items for individuals.  Just drop them by the Post starting 7 June during business hours (Mon-Wed, 8-11am) or call myself at 637-2240 or Barry at 637-0323 and we can make the necessary arrangements.  And don’t forget to stop by the Rummage sale, you might just find that special item you can’t live without at a fantastic price!!  Any leftover items from the Rummage Sale can be returned or they will be donated to other charities.  And then after the Rummage Sale, ………

Don’t forget out Community Social, which starts at 6pm and goes until the last guest leaves.  This is our time to socialize, play games and just have some fun out of the house.  The bar will be open and snacks will be provided and there will be door prizes!  I think that some may have gotten confused about this event.  Some may have thought it was only for those with birthdays or anniversaries during the quarter but this just isn’t so!!!  So, to eliminate any confusion, this Social is for EVERYBODY!!!  And we won’t even mention birthdays or anniversaries!  If you have any ideas for the social, just let us know.  Remember, this is a FREE event.  The only thing you will be paying for is your beverages so come out and have fun and maybe meet some new friends or reacquaint yourself with some old ones.

Independence Day Barbecue, 3 July, 11am –4 pm.  We will dedicate one of the rooms to Paul McMahon and the other to Alice Kutscher, members who have gone to Post Everlasting.  The dedication will start at 11am.  We will start serving food at noon.  We will be having live music provided by Bonnie Lou.  If you were there last year, you’ll remember her wonderful music.  If you weren’t there last year, come this year and find out why we invited her back!  The menu will be a choice of chicken, hamburger or hotdog, potato salad and beans, coffee or tea.  The bar will be open for other beverages.  Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children 5-11, under 5 are free.  We will also be having a raffle for a .22 caliber Western Field rifle (first prize) and a Compact Remote Control Stereo System (second prize).  See pictures.  Tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10.

Compact Remote Control Stereo System (Turntable, AM/FM Receiver, 3-Band Graphic Equalizer, Dual Stereo Cassette Deck with matching speakers

Tickets are enclosed for both the barbecue and the raffle.  Please purchase what you need and try to sell the rest.  On the raffle tickets, have the purchaser put their name and phone number on the half of the ticket to be put in the drawing jug and give the other half of the ticket to them.  If you need more tickets, just let us know and we will get them to you.  Winners of raffle need not be present to win.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

As we honor our WWII veterans and are soon to celebrate Independence Day, it brings to mind the oath that our newest citizens take when they celebrate their independence as a citizen of this great nation.  My Father took this oath in 1944 when he became a citizen.  He was a pilot in WWII with our allies in France and had come to this country for training and while here, fell in love with it.  Now, 60 years later, he is no longer with us but it reminds me of the love he taught me, not with his words, but with his deeds for this country.  He took pride in the oath he took and always carried his identification card that stated he was now an American.  Have you ever wondered what the words to the oath are?  Well, I decided to share them with you.  These are the words to the U.S. Oath of Allegiance according to the Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 8, Part 337:

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of American against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform non-combatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will peform work of national importance under civilian directions when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, so help me God.

How many of us would be willing to take this oath today?  I hope this answer is each and everyone of us.  I know I would.
