Good Day Post #57 Member!

    MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER:

Well, another year has passed and it has been a good one.  We hit a 112% on membership making us the first in the district to reach the 100% goal.  Thanks to all of you.  Now, for those of you that didn’t make the New Years Eve bash hosted by the Auxiliary, you missed a great time.  Thank you ladies we’re looking forward to the next one!

This past Sunday although a good day for me because I won at bingo, was also a sad day because we had to say see you later to Richard and Alva Brown.  They purchased a residence in North Dakota and this was their last bingo with us.  They have been members for a couple of years and their input, insights and company will be missed.

Now I would like to solicit your help if possible.  Along with the Ash Fork Food Bank, we are having a big event for the town on 12 March, a FREE Easter Dinner, and we need some folks to cook some turkeys with stuffing and hams.  We currently have 10 turkeys and we also have 2 hams being donated.  We could use a couple more hams and we will need some cans of whole corn, green beans, yams and stuffing mix, so if you wish to help by donating money, your time or food or all three for this event please contact me at 637-2240.  There will be more to come later.

Commander

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

I received an email from my sister-in-law, which hit on something very important.  What do you do if you think you are having a heart attack and you are all alone?  HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE.  Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw.  Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing conscious.  What do you do?  ANSWER:  Do not panic, but start coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.  A deep breath should be taken before each cough, the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.  A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.  Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.  Article published in Journal of General Hospital Rochester.

I want to thank all of you who braved the weather and came to the Spaghetti Dinner on 7 January--snow and all.  We had about half the folks we normally have so I still consider it a success considering the weather.  I especially want to thank my kitchen crew:  Ed Newcomb, John Sydow and Will Popp.  Thanks guys, you did a terrific job.  I want to thank Barry Sharp for tending bar and the Commander, can’t seem to remember his name, for handling ticket sales at the door.  I also want to thank the Girl Scouts who acted as our servers.  We have plenty of spaghetti sauce left over so we will be planning another dinner sometime next quarter.

Have you been thinking you want to do something for our troops overseas but aren’t exactly sure what to do?  How about sending them some books?  BOOKSAMILLION.com has a program called Books for Troops.  This unique program lets you select and purchase books for members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving overseas.  First go to their website and then click on the Books for Troops icon.  You simply buy the books of your choice from the list provided.  BOOKSAMILLION.COM will address and send your books to the soldiers - and you pay no shipping charges on the books you buy for the troops!  At least once each week, BOOKSAMILLION.COM will gather, address and ship the books purchased for the troops.  For more information, check out their website.  Thanks-a-million for supporting the U.S. troops!

If it’s been at least a year since you registered with the VA in Prescott and you haven’t had appointments, make sure you re-register with them.  Even if they turned you down it’s important you re-register.  If they open up to Group 7 eligible veterans, you want to already be registered.

Are you an atomic vet?  Were you in Hiroshima or Nagasaki in Japan after WWII or a participant in nuclear-weapon tests between 1945-1962 in New Mexico, Nevada or the Pacific?  Do you have cancer?  Twenty-one cancers have been linked to radiation exposure and the VA offers Health care and compensation.  [Source:  VFW Magazine, Nov/Dec 2004)

FRAUD WARNING:  The tsunamis that hit South Asia are being hailed as the worst natural disaster in this century.  Fraudulent e-mails seeking financial support for tsunami victims are surfacing in one of two forms. Individuals from phony, foreign organizations are sending e-mails seeking money to support relief efforts, and crooks are posing as victims' bankers seeking to collect donations for relief efforts. In this form of identity theft, known as "phishing," hackers request victims' credit card numbers and other personal information.  Over the Internet, fraudulent charities are creating Web sites and selling items through online auctions, stating that proceeds will aid victims in Asia.
While it is impossible to tell which of these newly formed charities will use donations to aid tsunami victims, adhering to the following guidelines will help ensure that donations go to help relief efforts.

-- Ask for the name of the charity, and verify that charity officials authorized the solicitation. Find out more by contacting the Better Business Bureau.
-- Do not give out financial information such as social security, credit card and bank account numbers.
-- Do not give cash. For security and tax record purposes, it is best to pay by check made payable to the beneficiary, not the solicitor.
-- Ask for a receipt showing the amount of the contribution and stating that it is tax-deductible.
-- Find out more about fraudulent charity schemes online at
www.ftc.gov.
