 MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER:

Hello to you all and let me wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!  As this year comes to an end I hope everyone will reflect on all the blessings they have received and take the opportunity to thank the Lord for what we have.  I know I have and will continue to do so everyday.  As a reminder, don’t forget about the New Year’s Eve Gala at the post that the Auxiliary is hosting, it sure to be a great one.  Get your tickets early so the ladies can ensure there will be enough of everything.  We will have a couple of designated drivers in case someone celebrates a little too much and shouldn’t drive.  So there is no excuse not to be there, so come one; come all.

On another note, we donated over 75 stuffed animals to the Ash Fork Head-start Program.  They were ecstatic to receive them and we also donated some oranges and candy canes to the Ash Fork School.

Well that’s it for now, so until next year I leave you with this quote: “My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one’s country, not to its institutions or its officeholders.  The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal.” – Mark Twain--

Commander

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

If you weren’t at the Christmas Party on 11 December, you missed some good food and a lot of fun.  The team of Lucy Kreutzer and Yvonne Gorniak were unbeatable at the shuffleboard table!!  Five teams tried and five teams failed to beat this deadly duo.  Thanks Lucy for being such a great partner!!  Thanks to Lucy Kreutzer, Ed Newcomb and Dolly & Barry Sharp for preparing the delicious food.  Barry says he’s still cleaning mashed potatoes out of his shoes.  And thanks to Maxine Bowling and her crew for the wonderful decorations.

MONTHLY TRIVIA: December Newsletter:  Are there penalties for the physical desecration of the United States flag and if so what are the penalties?   Answer:  There are currently no penalties for the physical desecration of the flag.  The American Legion and other members of the Citizens Flag Alliance continue working towards securing a Constitutional amendment to protect the flag from physical desecration.

This month’s question:  How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and why?

ITEMS OF INTEREST (if interested in an item listed, contact the Post for further information)

CAR JACKERS NEW SCHEME: Be aware of new car-jacking scheme Imagine: You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside.  Then you lock all your doors, start the engine and shift into REVERSE, and you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your parking space and you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window.  So, you shift into PARK, unlock your doors and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view.. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the car-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off!!  Your engine was running, (ladies would have their purse in the car) and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.  A purse contains all identification, and you certainly do NOT want someone getting your home address.  They already HAVE your keys!  Just drive away and remove the paper that is stuck to your window later.

VA improves "My HealtheVet" web site:  Under the latest improvement to VA's "My HealtheVet" Web site, veterans will be able to update personal information and record medical data such as prescriptions.  In the near future, we'll be adding other helpful features.  "A new capability now added to the site allows veterans to record their personal information and medical data - including emergency contacts, health care providers and insurance, prescriptions, tests and allergies - in a private, secure Internet environment”.  Eventually, veterans will be able to receive their medical records from VA online. Another new feature will be a "Learn About" tab, which will lead veterans to a variety of topics in health education.  The site is located on the Internet at www.myhealth.va.gov <www.myhealth.va.gov> .

Western Region Support Our Troops Rally, Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 5pm: Location, Ramada Express Hotel and Casino, Laughlin Nevada.  Please bring something to send to the troops.  Rally is to be taped and copies sent to our troops to let them know we support them.  Sponsored by The American Legion Departments of Nevada and Arizona.

DoD Officials Say No To Flea, Tick Collars in Care Packages For Troops: They’re not approved for use on humans as their use hasn’t been tested for either safety or effectiveness on people plus they are ineffective in preventing sand flea bites.  Individuals and groups who still want to show their support to the troops by sending a care package may want to consider including items such as pre-paid worldwide phone cards, lip balm, sunscreen, chewing gum with xylitol, travel size toiletries and a disposable camera.
