Ash Fork Legionnaire

Text Box: August 2005Good Day Post #57 Member!

  MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER:

Hey, it’s that time again and I would like to say we are doing great on membership so far.  Thanks to those that have answered the call and got their renewals in.  We are up to 62% right now.  Our goal for membership this year is 80 and we have 50 currently renewed.  We still need 30 more members to renew to meet our goal.  Please don’t wait for the bill to come in the mail from national headquarters.  We want to be FIRST in the state to reach 100 percent so get with Barry and renew as soon as possible.  Speaking of membership, at this months meeting we presented Charley Nixon with his 20 year membership certificate, so if you see Charley around congratulate him for being a 20 year member!

“Let us do our duty in our shop or our kitchen, in the market, the street, the office, the school, the home, just as faithfully as if we stood in the front rank of some great battle, and knew that victory for mankind depended on our bravery, strength and skill.  When we do that, the humblest of us will be serving in that great army which achieves the welfare of the world.” – Theodore Parker

On another note, the post is looking to start a Sons of the American Legion Squadron (SAL).  We have the application in hand; however we need 10 charter members.  So if you’re interested please contact Barry Sharp at the post to find out the qualifications to be a part of this program.  We currently have about 5-6 names on the list already.

Douglas Gorniak

Commander

Have you moved?  Did you give us your new address?  If you have moved, please make sure you give us your new address so we can make sure you continue receiving the American Legion Magazine and this newsletter.

We are having a Spaghetti Dinner on August 12 and five tickets are enclosed.  The dinner is from 5-8 pm and includes spaghetti (meat or meatless sauce), garlic bread, salad, and tea or coffee.  Please purchase what you need for yourself (we hope you will attend) and what you don’t buy, please try to sell.  Prices are on the tickets and please circle on the ticket whether it is for a child or an adult.  If you need more tickets, just let us know.  If you would like to volunteer to help during the dinner (washing dishes, cooking, and serving), just let me know.  We can always use more help.  If you live out of the area, tickets are not enclosed.

Update on the Soldiers 4 Soldiers Program.  First, I want to thank all those who have donated their old cell phones.  I’ve received several with lots of different accessories.  I’ve gotten an update from the program and as far as cell phones go, they only want the cell phone and not the accessories plus they will only recycle cell phones that are no more than about 5 years old.  Don’t forget, they also recycle the ink cartridges from your computer printers.  There is a box next to the copier at the post to place your old cell phones and ink cartridges.  For more information, contact Yvonne Gorniak at 637-2240.

Replacing Military Records.  Have you lost important military records and don't know how to replace them?  Learn what to do if you lose your discharge, separation, or other papers.  If discharge or separation papers are lost, duplicate copies may be obtained by contacting the:  National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records. 9700 Page Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63132- 5100.  Specify that a duplicate separation document or discharge is needed. The veteran's full name should be printed or typed so that it can be read clearly, but the request must also contain the signature of the veteran or the signature of the next of kin, if the veteran is deceased.  Include branch of service, service number or Social Security number and exact or approximate dates and years of service.  Use Standard Form 180, "Request Pertaining To Military Records," available from our site , VA offices or at the VA forms web site (http://www.va.gov/vaforms).  It is not necessary to request a duplicate copy of a veteran's discharge or separation papers solely for the purpose of filing a claim for VA benefits.  The National Archives and Records Administration receives many requests, and a response may take six months or more. If complete information about the veteran's service is furnished on the application, VA will obtain verification of service from the National Personnel Records Center or the service department concerned. In a medical emergency, information from a veteran's records may be obtained by phoning the appropriate service:  Army, 314-538-4261, Air Force, 314- 538-4243, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard, 314-538-4141.

Awards, Medals, & Decorations.  Have you lost military service medals, decorations, or awards that you or a family member earned and need to replace them?  Find out how to request for replacements and what forms you will need to fill out.  Information is available at the Post.

DFAS stresses myPay to 400,000 military retired members.  The Defense Finance and Accounting Service is gearing up another effort to move more retirees into the myPay electronic system and will send out a letter within the next few days to some 400,000 retired members under age 65 who are not currently enrolled in myPay.  Located online at https://mypay.dfas.mil, myPay is a web-based system that allows customers to make changes to their pay account via the internet.  Retired members can view their account information from any computer with Internet access virtually 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  DFAS officials emphasize that myPay provides customers with secure technology that meets or exceeds security standards in private industry. myPay uses strong encryption to protect personal information, eliminating the risks associated with identity theft inherent with hard copy statements.  Here are some of the things you can complete online:  1) Receive account and tax information without waiting for postal delivery.  2) Stop, change and start most allotments, including savings bond purchases.  3) Update your e-mail and mailing address so DFAS can keep you informed.  [Source:  AF Retiree News, 14 July 2005]

ICE Initiative.  Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE.  ICE stands for In Case of Emergency.  Cell users are being urged to put the acronym ICE -- "in case of emergency" -- before the names of the people they want to designate as next of kin in their cell address book, creating entries such as "ICE -- Dad" or "ICE -- Alison."  If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone no. of the person that the emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly.  It only takes a few moments of your time to do.  Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately.  ICE your cell phone NOW!

Record Funding Approved for Veterans.  U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, Chairman of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, said veterans should be pleased with a $2 billion emergency supplemental approved last week by the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, of which he is a member. "As we await for the Interior Appropriations bill to be finalized, we have today made steps to ensure that there is adequate money to ensure that veterans are well taken care of," Craig said. "The $1.5 billion approved earlier and the $2 billion approved...will later be reconciled. But we have assured veterans today that there will be sufficient money to meet the needs of veterans. Clearly, we are going to reach a point where we cannot continue to keep spending at this pace, but the needs of veterans are being met." In addition to the emergency supplemental of $2 billion, the legislation approved will provide more than $70.7 billion in direct payments to fund the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2006. That figure includes $36.6 billion for mandatory veterans' benefits including pensions and compensation.  [Source:  Veterans Report, 25 July 2005]
